Capturing a proposal is one of the most rewarding parts of my work as a photographer. These moments are raw, emotional, and completely unposed — and my approach is always to blend into the background so the couple can stay fully present while I quietly document the story unfolding. From the nervous excitement beforehand, to the joy of the “yes,” and the celebrations that follow, I focus on creating a collection of images that allow couples to relive every detail of that milestone moment for years to come.
Every now and then, I get the privilege of photographing a moment that feels like it belongs in a storybook. This surprise proposal at the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge, Co. Kildare was exactly that – full of love, emotion, and family.
The couple, who live in America, had travelled to Ireland to visit family. What she didn’t know was that he had something extra special planned. In the gardens of the Keadeen, surrounded by beautiful greenery, he dropped to one knee. The look on her face – surprise, joy, and overwhelming love – was one of those moments you can feel through the images. For anyone considering a proposal in Ireland, the Keadeen’s romantic grounds make a stunning setting.
After the excitement of the “yes,” the newly engaged couple joined their loved ones for what she thought would be a quiet celebratory dinner. But another surprise awaited. As she entered the room, she was met by her future in-laws who had secretly flown in from America to be part of the celebration. The emotion and joy were palpable, and documenting those embraces and happy tears was an absolute privilege.
To round off an already unforgettable day, we took some time for an engagement photo session around the hotel grounds. Fresh from the proposal, their connection was effortless – laughter, tender moments, and the excitement of starting this new chapter together. The Keadeen provided the perfect backdrop, and the energy of the day made every frame come alive.
Being able to capture not only the proposal, but also the joy of two families coming together, is what makes photography so rewarding. It was an honour to document this milestone, and I’m excited to share a glimpse of this incredible day below.
